Some Hydromantes I found on May 29th 2007. i found about 5 in 35-40 minutes.

What kind of biotope occur this salamander? I mean altitude, type of weather... there are so many different habitats in California (mixed forests of Douglas fir, pines, oaks, coastal scrubs...)

The area is hot desert chaparrel on the East side of the Sierra Mountains. The canyons they live in are steep and shaded, these occur in the waterfall slash zones (all rock & willows). There is a debate as to whether they're a sub species of the H. Platycephalus. The elevation is around 6000-7000 foot level (2000meters+) They do occur lower I'm told. Up the canyon and down below are large pine trees. Here's a view of the range if I can get it to post.
