These are my hongkongensis larvae. They'll be two months old on the 22nd June, and the largest is about 2 inches long. They are eating daphnia, bloodworm and frozen black and bloodworms.

Looking good, thanks for the update!

Thank you Jen.

Have yours started gulping for air yet?
Mine have started this so I have put a gravel 'ramp' in for them and a couple are using it an laying in the shallows...I thought this was a bit early though. If I remember right mine hatched about a week before yours.

I think yours hatched a lot earlier than mine. A couple of the bigger ones were gulping for air, but I thought they morphed at about 3 months? I've moved them into a bigger tank, but I might move them again to give them a slope!

Sometimes larvae will gulp for air as a way to regulate buoyancy, not necessarily for oxygen. Watch for any change in their gill size or head/tail shape. And be sure you have a secure lid, just in case.

watch for the belly pattern starting to develop too. Once this appears they are very close to morphing (at least in the cases of my hongkongensis and fuzhongensis larvae)

Looking good!

Chris

I heard that HK newts are difficult to breed is this true? what sort of setup did you have to do for them?

They started laying eggs the day I brought them back from the pet shop, so they had obviously mated either in the wild or soon after. I have 2 males and 2 females in a 1.5 ft long tank. I have a Fluval filter and airstone in there too.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
