I pulled my vargrans clutch today to put on perlite. I've had pretty good success pulling lugubris at 60 days so I thought I'd try it with these. Really I had no choice, if they hatched in the enclosure I'd never find them all. A small clutch but a big success for me.

I think I got a first. The first hatchling at ~75 days.

Good work, Russ!

Big round of applause!

Thanks. They're sure some small buggers. Hopefully it doesn't take me another seven years to get F2s!!

Here's a pic from today. The ones I retained are definitely growing at different rates. I see this lugubris quite often too.

nice job

It must be tough work getting fertile eggs from these guys. A job well done!

No, but I do owe this site an article on it.

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!! I love all Aneides! I would love to see an article on caring for Aneides from you! Also, I would like to see a list of salamanders you keep.

Very nice Russ. You seem to be the man when it comes to aneides breeding. Congrats on another very cool species breeding

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
