I got an email asking for a pic of a "clinical" set up I have talked about in the past, so I finally got my fat butt in gear and took a few pics to share...

The first is a T. shanjing in a plastic box. The rock allows the newt to get off the damp floor when it chooses.

The second is just a stack of various Tylo boxes...

The third is of larval O. vittatus in water...

The last 2 are the containers I'm raising the vittatus in...

Hope they are helpful...

The baster in pic 2 is used for sorting/relocating small larvae as well as drawing larvae poo. The jar of newt bites IS poo, but I can't bring myself to chuck it out even though NOTHING I keep seems to eat it willingly. The numbers you see written on the sides of the shoeboxes are used for record keeping and written in china marker so they can be changed...

Thanks for the informative pictures. You always learn something when you see other people's setups. Can I ask about ventilation in these containers?

Theres a great game of "spot the vittatus morph" to be had in the last pic, I got at least 4 for definate,,,,

The tops of most of the boxes are drilled for ventillation. Some I have not gotten to, but can say that I have not noticed a difference between animals of the same species with bot ventillated and non-ventillated tops. The lids themselves are fairly loose fitting and far from water tight. Most have to be weighted down to prevent the newt from pushing its way out.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
