Love is in the air.:D How did you trigger the change to breeding dress? Mine have been in my cold basement for over 2 weeks and nothing has changed.

Great! Did these guys breed last year for you too?

Nathan, Newts generally wont develop breeding plumage during the cold period, but immediately after the temperature increases and the daylight gets longer. Nice pics.

Thanks for the tip Benjamin. That's the piece of information I was unclear about.

On the few occasions I've wanted to induce mating I've always gradualy(over a month or two, but could prob be done faster) dropped the light period down to 6 or 8 hours. At that point increase the water level by at least two inchs whilst fairly quickly raising the light period to at least 12 hours a day(over 2-3 weeks).
Obviously drop the temperature a few degrees, then raise it back to optimal as the light comes up.

I have mine in a tank in my living room, and as soon as the hottest part of summer is over (round about september) they start changing, and start amplexing from oct/nov until january. Last year I didn't see any eggs, but found a morph in the tank. This year I'm looking and looking in the tank for eggs, I made those plastic egg-laying strips, and I keep seeing teeny baby snails on them which I mistake for eggs, get all excited, look closer, and get disappointed.

Seems that my Notophthalmus viridescens dorsalis were inspired by martial arts rather than easy-listening-music.

I could tell you exactly what she's screaming. "NOT NOW! I have dishes to wash."

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
