Went herping today, and despite the HORRIBLE weather i managed to catch a male T.marmoratus (whom by the looks of it seems to have entered the water very recently), and several L.boscai.

The habitat is defined by large plains of pasture, dedicated for cows...tipically ocuppied by Quercus ilex.
The breeding pools are natural accumulations of water, and most of all man-made pools intended for the cows to drink. Since the area was a valley close to a mountain system, the conditions were more humid than it´s normal in the rest of the province, where the climate is pretty dry.
As i was told, the population of marmoratus in the area has a tipically low amount of green. Also, i found that there was a rather interesting variation in the colorotion of the boscai´s belly.
As a note i´ll also say that all the animals found were males, because here it´s still early for breeding time.

Excuse the quality of the boscai´s photos...i made a mistake with the camera :S

Nice pictures and interesting report, Rodrigo. Thanks a lot for sharing! :D

You call this a bad weather? As I see in the last picture, weather wasn't so horrible. Maybe not good as for Spain, but if you had been in Warsaw today, you would probably have felt depressed indeed. ;)
7 degrees and rain - it's wonderful, isn't it? :]
But, focusing on the animals I must say that I really like them.
Thank you for sharing as Ralf, cause I haven't seen wild amphibians, even on photos, for at least 6 months.

Thanx.
Don´t let the clouds in the photo fool you. It rained cats and dogs and we were at 4ºC or so i think. I had never seen so much rain in this area, and it´s been like that for a week. Sure is going to be a very happy spring for all the amphibians though.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
