Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get a basic picture of what my set up is like. In here I have two adult FBN, and three juveniles.

This is a 29gal tank with Java moss on top of red slate, petrified wood, and Pagoda stone with natural gravel.

On the right hand side is the pump that gets water through the chiller (below) and back up to the filter, creating the waterfall on top. Not much current but pretty adaquate flow.

What do you think?

hi,
very nice setup, like the slate and java moss. one problem though, is 29g big enough for five FBN? it seems a little small for me. i may be wrong though. overall nice setup!

Simple but effective, I like it.
There looks to be plenty of hides on the land area, but the water looks quite open. They may appreciate the addition of some aquatic plants, to keep it simple you could add bunchs of elodea or milfoil or some floating plants.

Thanks for the complement, Blackhawk. I really hope it is not overpopulated.

From the picture it is difficult to see the extraordinary number of levels created by the stacking of slate. There is several hiding places both above and below the water line for each newt to have their own "personal" space.

hi,
wow your exciting setup gets even more amasing! hmm i didnt notice that before. although Lasher is probably right putting in more plants would provide them with more cover and also give them more places to hide should they choose not to hide in the slate.

Thanks for the feedback. I've wanted to add more plants for some time now, but havn't really known what I'm looking for. Great suggestions, Lasher.

I only thought of elodea as it wasnt clear how deep your gravel was. If the tank can handle it theres no reason why you couldnt go for more advanced planting. http://www.plantedtank.net is a great aquatic plant resource.

Edit: Mods, I think more than any other this section could really use a sticky thread for planting information as many would find it usefull but its not really appropriate to CC as an article/link list. Something listing good information and gallery sites for planted aquaria, online shops selling plants, species information etc. May suit all the Vivaria & Equipment sections, perhaps the live food forum as well. I have quite a few I could contribute, as I'm sure many others do.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
