Hello everyone!

I just recently found this site, (about 1 week ago) and have been reading through a lot of posts by users about aquariums, vivariums, terrariums and such. I have seen some very good setups and it inspired me to get an upgrade on my current situation.

Currently I have one Fire-bellied Newt (C.Orientalis I believe) and a Fire-bellied Toad living with it. They live in a 10 gallon tank at the moment and have been since I have gotten them. I was given my newt about 3-4 years ago and bought the toad a year or two later. Both seem to have an unbreakable bond and I have not witnessed any bad behavior from them, the toad will frequently sit on top of the newt and the newt seems not to care. They have only ever been fed newt pellets and crickets. (however neither like the pellets so I shortly stopped that) They both seem to be very happy and healthy, I hope to see them this way for a long time.

My tank setup is basic but has worked none the less, I think I may upgrade to a bigger tank, I was thinking a 25 Gallon with live plants and about 4 inches of water and rocks for the toad, I don't know if the newt and toad will be in contact with that much space but I hope they will.

There are a few pictures I added but they are bad quality.

I hope to learn a lot from everyone and have a good time.

- Robert

P.S Does my newt look too thin? Just wondering.

Welcome to the site, Robert! It is great to have you here! I am glad that you have found it helpful.

The only thing that concerns me is that you are keeping a firebellied newt with a firebellied toad. Species mixing is generally not a good idea, and while the animals may seem happy, or "the pet store was doing it", it is not the best idea. Take a look at this link, the first three examples already show why- http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Mixing_disasters.shtml

also, your newt looks alright to me. Good luck!:D

I know all about the disasters that have happened with mixing species, however I have had them for 2+ years together and none of the sort has ever happened to them.

I hope you can see that after that long together with no problems it shouldn't be a concern anymore.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
