Here are some new pictures of Squishy, I grabbed the camera because I just finished a water change and she was having some sort of seizure thing. She was swimming manically around the tank and smashing into the sides, I was hoping to get some shots but as soon as she saw the camera she stopped and hid her face. I really thought she was dead for a minute cause all the color drained out of her gills and she wasn't moving at all. I don't know really. I just recently read they are endangered so now I am even more terrified I will kill her. Any advice and/or suggestions are always welcome

Any other pics I can get will obviously be posted ha, I love posting pictures of my baby!

They're not 'endangered' in the technical sense. There really are millions of them in captivity.

If the water you're using for water changes is different from the tank water (temperature, hardness, pH, etc.), you can cause 'freak outs'. Sometimes even just the movement of the water will do that.

That must be it, I always use cold water with water changes and when I changed it today her tank water seemed to be warmer than the water going in. Poor thing I probably shocked her. Thanks

hey, I'm hoping to get an axy soon and I'm just curious what substrate you're using

Yea, for now she is doing ok and I should be getting a job soon so I can afford to get her more worms and take much better care of her. As for the substrate I have Calcium sand in my tank. I do not recommend it at all. The guy at the pet store talked me into it without mentioning that it dissolves into the water and completely messes your water quality. That's why there is hardly any of it in there anymore cause I am slowly trying to remove it and leave a bare bottom. I reccomend either regular sand (washed well) or a bare bottom.

Pool filter sand also works really well and it's pretty cheap. We bought a 50lb bag for $7.99 at a local garden center.

Yea, I wanted to get darker sand so she would show up better because she is so light. I was hoping that when we move back to my dad's I can get her a bigger tank and get some black sand or something that is still dark but doesn't dissolve into my tank haha. I want to get her back to dad's soon, or maybe to my boyfriends. My roommate messing with the temperature constantly is a huge stress on Squish.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
