Please meet Giselle (at least I think she is a she, otherwise let me know!!).

I went to the pet store on Monday and ordered a juvi (about 15cm, no more) golden albino preferably female. Well, obviously that didn't go to plan (very low faith in pet stores now!!). I was called on Christmas Eve to pick up my new golden, well you could imagine my surprise when I was given an adult (about 20cm), wild type. Hmm, well after saying my peace, I was told that I needed to take her? home because it was Christmas Eve (Wednesday) and the pet shop owner would not be back until Monday and therefore, was unable to keep the tank cold. I gave in, I can't have the little critter suffer because of one man's incompetence!! Anyway, it just means I can now convince Jason (hubby) for another axie and of course a bigger tank!!:D

Unfortunately, when I got her, Giselle was quite thin, but has plumped up well after a couple of days on daily feeds. She is very skittish and can't stand anything touching her, ie. me or anything in the tank! Hopefully, in time she will get over that. I don't think that she has been looked after too well. Apparently, the axies where she came from, are all bred in tiny little tanks with several adults in one tank. Poor baby!:(

She is currently in a quarratine tank, where she will stay for at least 30 days. Slimey is 13cm and Squishy is 11cm, when do you guys think is a good time to add Giselle (20cm) to the big tank (when I get it)?

So, let me know what you think?
Sex?
Age?

Oh and while I'm at it, here is some pictures of Smiley and Squishy's tank finished! It's 2.5ft and cost $10 in a garage sale; it will do until I get my 4ft tank.

Sorry these photos aren't too good, there was condensation on the tank. Oh, and its past midnight here! (Please don't ask me why am I taking photos of my axies after midnight because I don't know. Devoted I guess!!;))

Sorry to hear that things didn't work out quite as you had planned Kira, but nonetheless I think you've found yourself a beautiful looking Axolotl, I hope everything works out for Giselle, and please keep us posted on the new tank! :D As for gender and age, I'll leave that for the more experienced members, wishing both you and Giselle all the best coming into the new year, Zach

Aww what a lovely looking axolotl. I like the gold iridosphores around the tail. Reminds me of Sam Sparrow's "Black and Gold".

Anyone??

Hard to tell from the pictures over gender, though i'm thinking female. Reckon she's under a year -- say 10 months as she's about the same size as my wildtypes, who are about 11 months old. V pretty.

If Giselle is 20cm long, I would wait until Squishy and Slimey are at least 16cm before putting them together - at their present size Giselle could cause severe injury if she bit them.

I think Giselle is a girl - there! - my bet is in!! ;)

For that size, I'd say she's at least 8 months old? It's very hard to tell with axolotls though.

Thanks guys.

Yeah I was thinking girl too, hence 'Giselle' LOL.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
