Max is a curious little thing. People say axelotles don't like currents, well he will sit in the bubbles from my air stone for hours. Here is Max climbing over his flower pot cave and posing for the camera. He comes to say hello now that he has gotton used to me, its really cute.

Hi Liz,

Is your axie a melanoid? My new axie has an uncanny resemblence to yours! The same thick whitish lips and velvety black skin. Coincidentally, mine likes to 'bubble' bath too and loves resting her head on the airstone.

I actually have no idea what type of axelotl he is, the pet store didn't tell me, and my knowledge of them is pretty limited. So I'd say if he resembles your melanoid then thats probably what he is. There are no other colouration markings on his body, he's black all over, and looks velvety.

I wouldn't say melanoids are any more rare than any of the other simple-recessive phenotypes. He's very pretty though (but I'm biased because I have one myself).
 
"Happy Max" seems the right name, too. :happy:

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
