Hi Folks

One of my little boys axolottles succombed to the dreaded salamander bloating syndrome.
As I could not get a replacement at a sensible price i purchased some eggs from a "respected" source.... 20 eggs 7 hatched into little lottles... then all but one died!
attached as I can not get an image to down load is a pic of the hansome beast
4 toes on front limb, five on back, yellowish stripe on back, slightly speckled olive/yellow on flanks and yellow underside... quiite lively
about 2 months old and lost gills about two / three weeks ago.

Sold as axolotle... what is he??

I live in deepest darkest Devon... next to the sea.. I can see the Eddystone Lighthouse from my house

Retired now, last "job" was research into E-hux virus polimerase sites.

looks like a Lissotriton, perhaps L. vulgaris...? Please wait what others have to say, I'm a Cynops-man

Yes, it is Lissotriton. Difficult to ascertain which species at that age. There's a very good chance you were sold eggs of native newts i.e. vulgaris or helveticus. I think you should contact the seller and ask how this could have happened. If the eggs were collected from the wild it would be illegal to sell them.

Oh, and welcome to the forum ;)

Thanks... my suspicions confirmed!

Did contact seller of eggs, but now looking through this forum have noted that he could have sent me a smooth newt egg by mistake in a batch of lotle eggs as he sources daphnia from a pond and has canadian pond weed in his breeding tanks.

Where can I obtain properly quaranteened eggs from?

Thanks for such a quick ID from little info..... now back to inventing the pocket DNA sequencer!!!!

Axolotl eggs regularly feature in the for sale section of the forum, here.

For good measure you could even place a wanted ad, here.

will keep looking.... seems to be a "breeding season"in the UK???

/
? need 5 "posts" before I can go on the "wanted" ..... so if any one reading this has any genuine Ambystoma mexicanum eggs please advertise them !!

Sorry to say this, but this is really not the place for your request. I´m sure you can wait a few posts till you can oficially post in the wanted area..come on, it´s just a couple of posts more. (Note that any meaningless posts will be deleted though...there are people who just post to increase their post number and we don´t apreciate that).

On the other hand, i can´t help myself but to say that the correct name is Ambystoma mexicanum.

Good luck finding your axolotls(in the UK they are VERY common), and raising your tiny Lissotriton.

OLA!

The little hatchling... thanks folks for the ID.... has been names "Lissie"... from Lissotriton....
Try explaining that a newt is an amphibion and not a lizard to a 3 year old!!

Psssttt....what is E-hux virus polimerase ?

And welcome to our site.

And welcome to our site.
Emilliana huxlei a marine coccolithore...little plankton that makes up chalk.
has a BIG virus that infects it ( by big I mean its DNA length is almost the size expected in a bacteria!)

The identification of the DNA polymerase... sequence... would make it easy to identify, by making a keyDNA that fits the site and could be marked with a flourescent marker etc..... because viruses are very difficult to see, count etc etc.

Bet you wished you never asked... was at the forefront of Enviromental science... global climate change, warming and acidifying seas etc!

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
