I would increase the water volume...you can never have too much water!!!!
A larger volume is in both yours and your axolotl´s interest, since it will make the tank a lot more stable and able to manage greater quantities of amonia and nitrites.

I would also recommend adding more live plants.

Other than that, the tank seems fine. Perhaps an extra couple of hiding posibilities would be good.

I had a few more decorations and hides but it was too cramped they kept getting stuck and agitated, I also thought any more plants would get in the way when they swim and gulp air. they are live plants in case your not sure.

I have put about 40-45% more water in would you recommend having the filter outlet above or below the water level?

I have that same filter and I have mine below the water but pointing up so the water hits the surface. My axie seems happy with it that way. :) Cute little critters by the way!

that filter only points side to side. also that is only one of them my grump girl is in fridge!!

yeah so does my filter hehe I just have mine stuck on the glass sideways so the spout shoots up :D
I hope your grumpy axie feels better :)

Ill try that assumed the filter had to be upright will so the same, thank's

I like your doodles with the hearts...and Azhael said..you need more hides in the tank otherwise they may become aggressive or territorial over that one hide.

when I got them I assumed the bridge would be a hide too but they do not really use it. I will replace it. the drawings are by my girlfriend!!

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
