Hey all,

Just thought I would post some new pics of Luna because he/she is getting so big! I'm thinking that Luna is actually a male.... but I'm still not sure yet. :D

I just love this little critter! It loves chasing fingers and sitting on its tail staring out the glass. hehe.

And also you can see the yellow pigmentation better. So it is a golden albino.. just a very light version.

hi skilly....luna is very cute..i love the colour on her/his gills and the speckled look on her/his body.....does luna get on well with kahlua?.....

Oh, very pretty. I love the gills, I think I say that with most though...But it seems like everyone's are longer then my axie's (though mine aren't too short or anything, they're just not as full and long!).

What a cutie! Will he get darker?

Thanks guys!

I don't know if he will get darker or not... maybe a little more over time but I don't think Luna will ever be a very dark golden. It is slightly yellow... just like the moon.. thus a very fitting name. Hehe.

Hi lea! Yes Luna and Kahlua get along well  there have been a few snips here and there but no injuries. I'm sure they will settle in eventually and be best buddies.

Thanks Hannah! My other axie doesn't have very big gills either. Luna's look ginormous compared to Kahlua's

beautiful. You guys are seriously gettin me into Axolotls haha! So beautiful..my husband though is having none of it.. I already have 5 tank set ups between the newts, the fish and the shrimp farm hahaha.

Look female from all the reference pics I've seen.

Fantastic long gills, amazing, well done.

Axies are so much fun!

Yes I will agree that in the pics Luna does look female.... but it does have a larger bump than my Kahlua..... and on other days it looks like a male. It still hasn't reached sexual maturity yet. Toe tips are just barley changing color. So I am excited to finally find out what the heck it is. Haha. :D

Beautiful!!

I also think female she seems to have a round look to her.

I love the gills!

Luna is beautiful! Love those gills! I have to agree with Mel, the shape does lean more towards female. :D

Guess what!? I found out that Luna is actually a male :D I thought he looked more male than my Kahlua and the other day I found little spermatophores in the sand. Luna has also been doing the axolotl dance and trying to mate with Kahlua. Kahlua isnt really having any of it though. She took a nibble out of his tail and one gill frond.

Just thought I would share

Wow yep I see the maleness now lol

My wild just showed as male and he's about 19 months old!!
I called her Florence......I think it'll have to stay now after so long.

Haha isn't it funny how that happens? All of the sudden BAM they are male.

I don't think axie guys mind female names :D Shows the ladies that they are in touch with their feminine side. Haha

Hi, Skilly! Was wondering where you were at! Luna looks fantastic! Beautiful coloring and looks like he's a big guy too! Thanks for the update! How's our other favorite, Kahlua? :D

Speaking of late bloomers...I had a similar issue with Nefertiti (a golden) who presented as a female until about 19-20 months of age - including body shape! lol Then over the course of a couple of weeks, she sleeked down and suddenly (seemingly over night!!), she became obviously he!! Now I simply call him Nef. I was in denial for a while...no denying it now!! lol

Haha you just never know with axolotls.

Yeah I have been gone forever it seems.... My computer was dead and has just recently been fixed!
In the meantime Luna has gotten big. He grew so fast from when I got him in may. He was so wee. Thanks for the compliments too Dragonlady!

And Kahlua is doing good! Just as cute and gimpy as always. She doesn't like Luna's sudden interest in her though hehe. She has to fend him off :D

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
