Just got my Axolotl from electronfusion. We are still trying to decide on a substrate and on a name for her (at least I think it's a girl)

She is a beautiful axolotl! =] Sand is probably your best bet on substrate. Just steer clear of gravel! =]

I can't see properly, but from the first picture it looks as though she could be male.
if you provide a picture of 'her' from above, and of 'her' cloacal region, we could tell for almost certain x)

those are nice plants. where can I get my hands on some sticky plants like that? =D

ohes also. aesthetically, I think large river stones would look good in your tank, harder to clean than sand though, possible bits of slate.

Yea thinking more sand vs anything else. The plants I made myself by hot gluing some purchased plants to suction cups, this way they stay in place and don't go floating all around.

I will see if i can get some better pics of it later and post them for your assistance.

I like what you did with the plants! as for substrate, I think many would agree that sand is the best. enjoy your new baby. :D

these are the best that i could do to try to determine the sex. Also added the sand

your axie is beautiful.

although im a sand lover, of bothe natural and black varieties, your barebottomed tank does have a nice modern appeal, and axie do like barebottomed too.

its also easier to spot and clean poop.

nice big tank you have there, just a shame it isnt more shallow and longer, as 99% of the time the top will not be used.

Thanks, yea I really like it, just having problems determining male or femail, any thoughts based on the pics? I hate call it, it. Will try to get some pics of it's area when i can, but it doesn't like to get up on it's back legs yet. Please note it's about 3-4 months old.

This is the Axys first home, i'm sure it will be getting bigger later. Just had an extra 10 gallon that I was going to use for my Saltwater tank, but didn't. But since it is only 10 gallons, it fits nicly on my kitchen bar area so i can watch it from all angles.

The only problem that I have noticed with the barebottom tank was that the axy was not moving around too much, now with the sand, it's constantly on the go and always seeing where I am so that it can watch me.

To be honest mate I think its abit too early to sex this one, could be upto or over a year untill mature enough to tell if its a boy or girl (usually bout 6 months or so). Good call on the sand your axie has something to grip onto now rather than sliding about the bare glass floor, and yes you are right you will probably need a bigger tank in the future (its fine at the mo so no worries, tis just that my axie went from 5/6inches to 11inches in 3months and still growing, so bare in mind that you may need to upgrade sooner than you think! he out grew my 60ltr (bout 14 uk gal or 16 us gal i think) within two months of getting him!

Happy axolotling!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
