I hate to break it to you, but those stones may be swallowed by your axie and cause impaction. You should get rid of them or get larger ones which are at least as large as your axolotl's head in every direction.

I do love your axie though, those very nice long gill stems make it look very cute :)

What a pretty little axolotl, and lovely pictures.
I have to agree that the stones need to be removed. Axolotl gulp in their food , and in the process anything in the area goes in too....including the stones. I like the cave and the plants.
One more thing to point out, your thermometer reads 24 degrees. This really is too warm . Temperatures generally above 20 degrees will cause problems for your axolotl. Are you able to move your tank to a cooler room ? You'll need to take out some water, but if you save this into clean buckets, you'll be able to use it to re-fill.

Hey guys,
OJ thanks you for the lovely compliments. I will take out the stones tomorrow :)
As for water temperature it is proving to be a difficult issue due to the Western Australian climate. I was trying ice bottles at first but this didn't drop the temperature more than a degree or two.
I went to a pet shop to see how the axolotls there are being kept.
Those guys are at 26C!! Is it possible that axolotls bred here (Australia) are just more acclimatized to the warmer weather, (they seemed pretty healthy, only signs of damage was gills being nipped at by the other Axolotls in the tank)?

Or are those poor Axolotls being tortured?

Haha, he's really sweet! I love how he almost looks startled with those lovely gills :)

Cool name, too!

The pet shop I got mine from told me to keep my axolotls on gravel, and at 26! soon changed that, but, 3 months after taking the gravel out, I am STILL finding bits of gravel being pooped out, which is awful, so you do right by taking out the stones!

Anyway, congrats, he's gorgeous.

He's a cute little guy, but I think that tank might be a bit too small for him when he is full grown.

Very cute! Although they are being kept at a higher temperature at the pet store, I still wouldn't trust it. From my experience with pet stores they aren't always the most knowledgeable when it comes to axolotls. I'm sure there are some that are great, but personally I trust the people on here and reputable axie care takers more then a pet store employee.

I would go back to the store and actually bring the issue up (politely of course!)

Nice axolotl. 26 °C is a high temperature, ideal is between 4 - 23 °C.

[bellabelloo - One more thing to point out, your thermometer reads 24 degrees] ...

Maybe ... but in my layman's mind I imagine that even if they don't become critically ill, over time they would steadily become less healthy, at those sorts of temperatures. If you can get an inexpensive fan, something like a desk fan and angle it to blow air across the top of the water in your tank at an angle it increases the rate of evaporation which can cool your water by a couple of degrees C which will make things safer without too much difficulty. Also, remove the hood if you have one. You can also help cool the water by having a bubbling airstone or two in there.

Have a look at http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-beginner-newt-salamander-axolotl-help-topics/f48-axolotls-ambystoma-mexicanum/f59-tank-set-ups-filters-substrate/72116-australian-summer-again.html

ps. very definitely lovely axolotls!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
