Thought I'd better post some current photos of my axies - around 13 months old.

The wild type is Canaq (pronounced Kan-ack), which is a blend of Canis Aqua (water dog). The 2 goldens still aren't named yet, mainly because I have trouble telling which 1 is which! I think 1 has slightly darker / more reddish gills ;)

The 1st 3 photos are Canaq (obviously!), the next 3 are the little guy who I think has lighter gills, the next is the current tank set up (with Canaq + darker-gilled axie) + the last photo is the little 'un who I think has slightly dark gills

Lovely axies! I just love goldens and wilds.... obviously!
your goldens are very hard to tell apart indeed! haha.

Very cute! I particularly like Canaq!

Mojo, the guys are looking really great. I'm loving that "grass" what is it, and how is it for cleaning?

Forgot to say that although the axie in the last photo looks darker all over, that must just be the photo, because their bodies are the same shade ;)

Fake grass mat thing
★1FT X 3FT ARTIFICIAL GRASS RUBBER BACK FAKE GRASS ★ on eBay (end time 15-Mar-11 20:26:44 GMT)

Non-degrading "rubber" apparently. And, I'm not sure about it withstanding a pressure washer, but there was rather a lot of moulting to begin with - I soaked it in the bath, swirled in around the bath + scrubbed at it for at least a week, but it still moulted into the tank for the 1st couple of weeks + I had to keep syphoning bits out of the tank before the axies decided they looked tasty! I reckon the moulting was just edge bits that were already loose from trimming, but not loose enough to come out easily!

It's not too difficult to clean really (apart from some bits that go down between the edges + the tank, but even those can be persuaded to come out) - I suck up any obvious bits with the trusty turkey baster, then kind of hoover about in it.
Don't know if my axies were just getting fed up with frozen bloodworm cubes, but they don't seem to eat as much of the bloodworm when on grass mat rather than sand.

The MAIN problem with it (+ the reason I'm considering going back to sand) is live earthworms - they quickly start tryng to burrow into it + REALLY attach themselves with their heads - I have to be quite rough with the turkey baster (again!) to losen them in order to either retry feeding or to take them out of the tank. I like to see who's eating how much though, so I feed the axies direct with a baster + it's getting rare that a worm escapes us ;)

Beautiful axolotls. I really like the axolotl on photo nummer 7 (the golden one).

Aww, Mojo, they're lovely! I do so want a golden!

So what's the texture of that funky grass like? Is it soft? It looks fantastic.

LoL @ everyone wanting the goldens... I was actually looking for leucistics, but Ron was so accomodating. And yes, I'm really happy with them ;)

I have got 2 3ft tanks on a double stand though, so may get some leucs for the bottom tank eventually (my friend was supposed to be having it for her axies, which are the little-mates of mine, but we found a nice set-up going cheap, so she has got that instead).
Can't get any more than that though, as I already have 5 corn snakes (6 if you include my friend's, which I had been babysitting since we got them, as it was a non-feeder), all in seperate vivariums, my daughter's hamster, a GAL snail + a large dog. I suppose if there is such a thing as a triple stack of aquariums though... ;)

I wouldn't say the mat was soft as such. Not like moss anyway. But, the individual strands are not hard - they are definately strokable + pleasant to the touch. And, they move freely. Not harmful to soft axie bellies anyway ;)

And Mewsie, I ADORE your avatar - every time I see a post from you, I say "herro" in my head :p

LoL @ everyone wanting the goldens...

Surely you don't need BOTH of them? I could help you out, you know! ;)

Cool! I looked at the link, and it looked sort of soft, but its difficult to tell!

Why, thanks ^_^ It's when you start saying out loud that you need to worry. Not that I ever do that

I wanted a leucistic and a wild when I started but my son decided he wanted a golden albino so we got 1 and a leucistic and then I just had to get a wild 2 weeks later :)

Isn't it great, you should see her valentine one, its so cute I had to have it for my laptop background (thanks again for that Mewsie mwahh) x

Mojo think your axies look great, nice hides aswell :D

I've still got a few strips of oufcuts of the grass matting (was going to let my daughter use them for gluing!), so if anyone in the UK wants to have a hands-on tester piece, I don't mind posting a few cms ;)

And Mewsie - I don't NEED any of them, but I believe they enrich my life (+my daughter's) + I'd like to think I do the same in return for them... Although I can't rate Ron highly enough, so maybe not :( At least it gives him a bit more space though :p

(my friend was supposed to be having it for her axies, which are the little-mates of mine, but we found a nice set-up going cheap, so she has got that instead).

They are LITTER-MATES of mine, although I guess they are little-mates to me - can see the differences in the way we've kept them so far, as mine were upgraded to a bigger tank + then the 3ft tank before hers were + hers are probably only 1/2 the size of mine. They do look + act perfectly fine though, so guessing available space does have an effect!

You're welcome - I haven't forgotten about that Firefox thing, either!

Amen to that!

I work a lot from home, and I sit in the kitchen where I can watch the little ones plodding about their little lives, good for the soul, I think, their floaty ways are very relaxing to watch!

I'm with Mewsie on wanting a golden and this has just confirmed it even more!

One day my pretties, one day! *cackles*

Anyway! Beautiful axolotls! They look so healthy and happy.

And there's me thinking it's a good job they all look female, so I won't end up with eggs I don't know what to do with.... ;)

You play 'em some Barry White, and I'll start cycling this empty tank ;)

LoL!
What good will that do if they're all girls?!?!

Besides, I haven't got any Barry White :D
Got Foo Fighters on at the moments, but apart from that, they get to choose from Sunna, Staind, Robbie Williams, The Cranberries, Queen or The Phantom of the Opera, as that's all I have loaded onto my laptop :p

Well, if they are all girls, at least Dave Grohl should do it for them.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
