Hi all! I am relatively new to herping, but I wanted to share this find with you. I wasn't really looking for it, but we were out camping in Southern Florida. It was very hot, probably around 95*F, all sun and not a cloud in the sky. I also included a pic of the surrounding area. It was extremely dry: we've been in a drought here for a while.
As we were driving away from the campsite, I spotted this tortoise on the road (I believe it to be a Gopher Tortoise). I don't like to bother or move wildlife, but in this case I think he needed some help off the road. ;) He was not too happy with my help, but I think his momentary discomfort was worth it.
I was really excited to find this, even though I think its fairly common to South Florida. I'm from Ohio, so even those little anoles running around interest me!

Good find! I've always liked turtles. They're so... ancient.

Nice one! Tortoises are wonderful. You did the right thing helping the old gal (or boy) across the street :)

Yes, that is a Gopherus polyphemus. Very nice specimen.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone! :D Maybe I'll start making dedicated herping trips.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
