are newts creatures of logic? Probably not.

These alpine juvies have access to a much bigger, much nicer island at the other end of the tank - but noooo, it's soo much more fun to all pile on top of tiny Plymouth Rock and try to kick each other off....who will be king of the hill?

Psh, it's not because there is a bigger one elsewhere - but it's because everyone wants THAT one, they must have.
I bet if one goes to the other side.. the rest would probably follow like sheep.

*sigh*

hehe, Mitch - you must have watched Finding Nemo ;)

My first thought was that Mitch plays Battlefield 2 :D

I guess those are alpestris, but are they apuanus ?

Yeah, those are apuanus, and they are lovely!
I´m afraid your newts must have british blood in them, Molch, it seems to me like they have a natural knack for stubbornly conquering land :p
You are not dangling a worm over the spot just to take great pictures and fool us all, are you?

Hey Molch,

I came up with another question, how many of them do you keep in a tank of what size ? Alpestris where the first species of newts I got to know so I am always eager to learn something about the conditions they can be kept in ;)

Best Regards,
Jakob

Hi Jakob,
I have my 6 adults in a 40 ga breeder tank (90 x 45 x 45 cm).

These are recent morphs, about 6-7 cm long. I've kept 11 of them in a ten gallon and another 12 in a 20 gallon since they were larvae.

Amazing photos they look beautiful!

I agree with emz they are some beautiful looking newts!!

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
