30" x 30" x 16" aquarium for 2.2 P. walti. just finished and moved them in about 2 months ago. As I suspected they do seem to like the deep water.

Beautiful. I love the way all the java ferns are attached to the wood and how natural the rock looks in the background. I think I would plant it a bit more if it was me, but it might throw off the balance of the tank. Anyways I love the look. Great job.

That's a really nice looking tank man!

Question. Have you made the rock parts and the "water" lianas yourselfe?

Totally legit

Looks very nice...I wish I could put more plants in my P. Watl colony tank but they get very destructive around feeding time and the constant courting that goes on that I can't keep any plants but some java moss attached to decorations and floating unless I want to re-plant the tank daily. They seem to always dig them up or otherwise disturb the plants with their rowdy behavior. I like how the plants are anchored to the vine..what did you use? fishing line?

You may want to consider adding some floating plants (elodea, java moss) for them to hopefully lay eggs on as it makes it super easy to remove the eggs before the adults start snacking on them

Real good looking tank there, nice job! Your newts are spoiled;)

No plants are "planted" directly into the substrate. all plants were strapped to the roots using zip ties and left to root onto the log for a month before adding the newts. They are very well attached now and the newts will not be able to dislodge them.

I doubt these animals will breed. They are probably over 20 years old and have not attempted to court for a number of years now.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
