What a cutie :)

Are those fish safe to share space with? Some fish can attack the gills :(

Don't let your new friend get stressed with sharing a tank with incompatible tank mates.

Get some meat on those bones he looks very skinny. I would suggest lots of feeding especially earthworms.

He has been eating like a pig, he looks fatter now. He's eaten three of those fish since i put them in there for him. I have the axolotl pellets and frozen bloodworms for him, but those didn't seem like enough, bc like u said he is skinny, so I got him some feeder fish to eat (from a small mom n pop shop where I know the owner personally). I don't think the guy I bought Dobby from was feeding his axolotls enough. They all looked hungry. I'm workin on it though. He is one of the gfp colored ones.... Not sure what kind of bulb to put on the tank, I have been looking around for one. I looked for an axolotl that was big enough and seemed pretty healthy, nice gills etc for about 6 months to even find him... and I have done a lot of reading about them as well. Not saying I know it all (cause I definitely dont!) but I sort of know the basics. He is the first axolotl I have had! (btw... the first pic overhead was the day i got him... he is rounder around the middle now... about as fat as his head is wide. Ive had him almost 2 weeks.)

I wouldn't worry about the fish as long as they aren't picking at him. And especially if he's eating them! Just keep a close eye. If you notice any signs of picking remove them asap. Feeders can be hit or miss. I've kept small fish like guppies with my axolotls for the past year and haven't had any issues, but I'm always keeping an eye out for trouble.

It's good to hear that he's gained weight! Their bellies should line up with their head at the widest point, so he sounds much healthier now :)

thanks :) He ate the other fish last night, I do believe they have helped fill him up. what kind of earth worms do ya all use? Just like bait shop worms? i really dont feel like the pellets and the bloodworms are enough... lol seems more like a snack to him.

Mine actually have pellets as their staple diet. They are specifically made for axies. They have fish and shrimp in their tanks for them to hunt and that is their main variance. Sometimes they get frozen bloodworms.

My pair have actually never tried earthworms before. I'm a little embarrassed/sad to admit that. I don't have a yard and the people I live with aren't too fond of an in-house worm farm.

sounds good to me :) I also have the pellets, but he was very thin when I got him so I figured the fish would fatten him up. Your avatar pic is very cute! I used my cell phone to take my pictures through the glass and it's not very clear. What kind of shrimp do you have in there? I may try that as well, I like little ghost or red shrimp. His tank is in the center of my living room, so I also keep a close eye. Waited this long to have him, I'm gonna try n make sure he is well taken care of:D

Thanks! That's my little lady Bowie :)

I have ghost shrimp in currently. I've done red cherry shrimp as well, but I'm having a hard time finding any locally. He's lucky to have such a caring owner! You should upload more pics.

Nice

Blonde question ... why do you think its a male?

Oops! I actually can't tell. I don't think s/he's big enough yet to know. I just tend to call them 'he' until proven otherwise lol.

But you should be able to tell when Dobby's toes get black tips. If there's a big bulge under the tail, it's a boy, if not, then it's a girl.

LOL I meant KS85 " I think it is a male"

I tend to call them all him/he as well

Oh lol I didn't read the name and thought you were KS85 replying to me again :p

:D lol.... my name's Kristen. I didn't set up a signature or anything, haven't messed around with settings too much on here. But I think he is a male because there is a bulge under the tail, already. I don't think his toe tips look darkened yet, so I could be wrong.

here is his tank now, I rearranged a little.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
