I bought some new tankmates on Friday for my young albino (?) Tuffnut after his sister died of a fungal infection a few weeks ago. He was moping around the tank and not eating. Unfortunately I quoted my required size to the petshop as 12-14cms (as that is the total size of Tuffnut). You can imagine my surprise when I went to pick them up and got these monsters. Apparently pet shops measure between the front and hind legs to get the size. =/ However I did take them (and they were the cheapest full grown axies I've ever seen) and they are all settling in quite nicely now. Tuffnut has since started eating again.

I would separate them immediately, that little lotl' will be food soon enough. Adorable though.

Nawww.. Really! =( I don't have another tank. We have a couple of danios in there for food. Have you had that happen in the past?

Really. An axolotl that size will easily make a snack of the smaller one.

The question is do you feel lucky, huh do ya?

One or two munches and that little guy could be dead or missing more than he can grow back.

You could get lucky and not have an issue but do you wanna chance it.

The little guys head can fit in the mouth of the bigger Leucistic. Game over

There's always a risk of mishap when putting different sizes together, especially a difference of this scale. That's not to say anything will definitely happen but is the risk worth taking? Axolotls don't generally "attack" out of aggression, but out of instinct. Of course, if somethings smaller than them and it just happens the float past, they will think it's edible. Ideally they need separating, for now.

Dang it! Alright I will start looking for a new home for Tuffy. I have a tiny tank that has guppies in it (was supposed to be food for the original lot, but they never ate them) but it's only 12lx9w x 6.5 high and runs a bit warmer than the other tank. Or do I try to take the bigger ones back and see if he can smaller ones for me?

If you're able to part with them, it may be worth taking them back. I feel in the long run, if you can't afford another tank, it would be best for all of them. This way you can at least know your little one won't become lunch and hopefully the larger ones can go on to find new homes.

Yea, sorry to be so "harsh" with my reply. The pet shop might take them back if you exchange for smaller ones, otherwise you can buy a small tank until tuff nut grows up, you can usually get pretty cheap tanks online. :)

You can always use a plastic tub. Cheaper than a new tank, and you'll have it around for a hospital tank.

Olivia, that wasn't harsh, that was honest! =)

I do actually have several plastic containers I could use. That's a good idea.

It's not so much that I can't afford a bigger tank, it's that I have no where to put it! We're looking at moving in 12 months so I'm definitely keen to get a bigger axoltol tank then.

Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it. I'll let you know how I go.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
