HI there, I'm geekychik and I live in western suburbs of Melbourne, in Australia.
In recent days, I picked up a little golden axolotl from a fellow caudata member, Lady Rassilon. So far, it's been very happy in its new home (pictured). Due to the fact that I happen to pick it up on the same day as the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, I have nick named it baby Smaug, after the dragon in the story. He/She really likes hiding behind the black sponge filter, to the point where I panicked at once stage because I couldn't find it  Every now and again, I go to check on Smaug and its a game of hide and seek :p

Sorry the pictures of Smaug aren't that good, I didn't want to blind it with my flash on my crappy phone camera and the tank has white foam underneath it. I assure you, it may look deceiving, but there is only ONE axolotl, its just reflection.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
