Hi,

I was hoping someone could help sex my 2 Gold Dust newts. They appear (to my eye at least) to be different sexes, and I'm guessing that the fatter one (featured in the first 2 pics) is male. Pics attached.

Thanks!

It looks to me like the newt in the first/2nd picture is a male (shorter rounded tail, larger cloaca) and the newt on the right in the last picture looks like a female (smaller cloaca, tail longer than the body) but its hard to tell for sure.

I agree. The first two pictures look like a male and the third picture looks to be a female.

Thanks! That's what I thought too, but I wanted to double check as I have never kept this species before, and because I'm used to the females being the fatter ones. :)

I like this specie. Hope to have them again soon.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
