Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has animals laying eggs/breeding at this time. My Danube Crested Newts and Spanish Ribbed Newts surprised me by laying in winter. I was not expecting eggs till spring :p So answer up above, what species are laying for you right now and then post below. The poll is multiple choice so you can choose as many as you like :D I tried to cover all the basic ones, if I left out an important one please let me know.

Yep, my C. pyrrhogaster are breeding at the moment. I was also thinking they'd wait until spring but other pyrrho keepers have assured me it's normal for them to start in late autumn. As I type this the females are peeping out from high up in the weeds while the males are stomping round and round the bottom looking for them!

I only keep axolotls. They seem to breed whenever there is a drop in temperature. Or there's a Y in the month. Or just because it's the weekend

My T. dobrogicus, Mesotriton. a. apuanas and Lissotriton v. ampelensis are all laying eggs right now. The Lissotriton have been laying since late November. Have larvae of all three species in tubs. I feel like I may be spreading myself a little thin and be trying too much at once...

Hey Evan.

So I am a bit confused. Does amplexus/courtship behavior count as breeding? Or just when they lay eggs?
I might have some eggs coming soon. Hard to say at this point though.

And Taricha shouldn't be Rough skinned newts. Rough skinned newts are a specific species, while Taricha is a family. It should be Pacific newts ( Taricha ).

Seth, amlplexus does not count. People see amplexus with rough skins but people rarely see eggs unfortunately. Also I said rough skinned newts because few people keep the other Taricha species, and by adding (Taricha) I am implying that if you have the other species breeding they would fall under that category.

Ok, thanks for the specification. I know people see amplexus in this species a lot and not a lot of eggs, but why does that matter? Yes I know that some people keep other Taricha species, that is why I said it should be Pacific newts, because that is the whole family, not just one species. Like you said Mole salamanders not Axolotls ( Ambystoma ) that is a whole family not just one species. I just thought it should be the same, that's all. -Seth

Thanks to all who voted, also, if you voted, please post and state what species is laying specifically. For example, what species of crested newts?

Hypselotriton orientalis, but you like knew that already so

Can any specifically state what type of crested newts are breeding? I am looking to get more crested newt species into my collection and want to know if they all breed around the same time.

My axies are breeding. Not sure why, but now i've got a tank divider up...

My leucistic axies are breeding. They seem to breed every month, but I'm not sure why.....

Here's a few snaps of my female C. pyrrhogaster laying eggs over the last few days, out of all the plants they have in their aquarium they much prefer Java fern for some reason!
