Hi all,

Was out by a local pond where i know there are palmates, but this guy looked different to me - a much greyer colour and larger too.
Anyone ID?

Thanks!

Andrew

Hi
This is definitely a female of the Lissotriton genus, maybe Lissotriton vulgaris since you said it was bigger. If you want to know, Smooth Newts (Lissotriton vulgaris) will have a spotted throat whilst Palmates (Lissotriton helveticus) will have pink and/or completely spotless ones.

It looks like a female L. vulgaris, although it could just be a large Palmate, they're sometimes difficult to tell apart from a picture.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
