Hi everyone. I'm new to posting but have been trolling this site since I got my first axie 3 years ago. Now I'm up to a whopping 4! I have 2 lovely pairs of love birds (that won't ever give me eggs!). I'm going to try and post photos of my babies! Comment away - maybe some odd ball suggestion on how to get eggs. I've tried every text book trick so far with no luck! Thanks in advance everyone ?

Hello and welcome to the forum! My name is Seth :)

Good looking axies you have there :D

Have your tried lowering the temperature and then bringing it back up to get them to breed? Are you sure they are male and female? -Seth

Hi Seth,

Thanks for the compliment!

I swear I've tried everything. Water temperature changes, putting the tank by a window for natural light and giving it a "seasonal" feel. I've even swapped the couples. Now I am starting to second guess if I've got the male+female going on! They all are old to be showing. The youngest I have is just about 18 months. The males(that I think I have) got a manly bump going on, the females look pretty flat down there. So I'm a little confused- maybe I have stubborn axies?

If you do have pairs and they aren't breeding after all that stuff you did, I don't know what will get them to breed....

It is quite incredible actually, I have heard of people accidentally breeding axies all the time, so the fact that yours aren't after all that trying is remarkable  Unless of course they aren't pairs.

Do you have any pictures of there cloaca's? -Seth

I don't currently have any, but I can definitely get some in the morning! I'm hoping my issue is something simple I've been overlooking and not that I might have all well endowed females

So I go and post my troubles about no eggs, and I look in my tank and find a few patches of these. Are these axie eggs or snail eggs??

:( from just looking quickly on the web, these are not axie eggs. It looks like my cory cats laid them! Good news, in order for them to lay eggs, your water conditions have to be excellent, so I'm doing something right there!

You keep Cory catfish with axolotls?!

Also adding what is your temp?

I do keep them with my axies - i know its advised not to keep any other species with them, but I have never had a problem with them being in the same tank. The cory cats make sure to stay out of the way! Do you think this could be a reason why the axolotls are not breeding?

My temperature currently - as I'm looking is 67-68ºF its right in-between the line. So thats about 18ºC.

I know there will be a ton of backlash about the Cory cats so I will try to cover all the bases here. It's not about the cories being fast enough to avoid capture it's about the off chance they do get caught which will almost always result in the death of the axolotl. Those cute little fins on top are like barbs and will lodge themselves inside the axolotl. The cories shouldn't bother the axolotls too much but their often erratic swimming might be a little stressful. Also I will add that the cories breed at around 65f so it's not surprising you have eggs. Cories run the same risk as anything that can be swallowed and cause impaction... Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't justify the risk. The axolotls may never breed or you may wake up to hundreds of eggs either way it's not as controllable as other species.

Oh jeeze I didn't realize the Cory cats were that dangerous! I will definitely take them out and throw them in a different tank. I don't wanna risk my babies dying!! Thank you for the info!

Np :) its better to not risk it especially with things that can be eaten.
