My name is Eric, and my wife (Amy) and I are receiving an axolotl who was rescued from a research lab when he was an embryo. We are new to caring for any aquatic creatures, but we thought we could make a home for one of these little guys.

He is somewhere between 3-6 months old, and we will take him once we believe our tank to be satisfactory. We are naming him Boblotl, or "Bobble" for short. Right now we have a simple 10 gallon tank which is currently being cycled. This tank is very preliminary and we will add more hides for him, and then we will upgrade to a bigger tank soon.

We have done a lot of reading, but we always are looking for more information which will help us be better parents. Much of the information we have read about axolotls came from this website, and we are excited to be a part of it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
