I am very excited to finally make an account on this forum! I have been a long time luker/admirer and this past Sunday I finally found myself two juvenile axolotls so naturally I have a million questions.
First let me introduce my axies Marvin (Leucistic GFP) and Medusa ("Purple" Wildtype"). I was in contact with a breeder for a little while and all of the photos on her website looked beautiful. All her axolotls had long fluffy gills and her aquariums all looked amazing... We drove a few hours away to meet up at a reptile expo and quickly realized that her baby axies were not in the best shape and decided to go with the older ones instead of the babies. I had driven three hours to get them and didnt want to leave them behind.
They don't have nice beautiful gills like I was hoping but I think they are still adorable and I hope that one day they will be as beautiful as some others I have seen. I know that some people say gills are genetic so I hope they fully recover some day!
It's hard for me to tell if they look stressed out via the gills because some lay flat while others curl. What do you guys think?
I do also have a question that I was hoping someone might have an answer to...
I still have not found and feces in the tank. Do you think it's more likely that they are eating each others poop or that they just haven't gone yet? When do you start to worry? They are "juveniles" but I was not given a specific age or birth date on them so I'm not really sure what to look for.
Thanks for reading this long winded post if you made it this far! I look forward to being a part of this community and hopefully learning new information about these amazing critters!
