greetings!
been on here for a bit and just getting around to this post.

just a quick intro and sharing of our lotl. ive liked them forever and get to live vicariously through my son not that he has one. we got him from a local breeder and was told he/she is a melanoid "starburst"? he is for sure gfp. my son named him nightmare and after keeping in a tub while cycling the 20 long he now lives in my sons room in his big tank. its outfitted with a 75g sponge as well as a 50g aquaclear HOB filter. we use RO water and do about 5g water change every other week. his parameters are staying really low. make my bichirs look like pigs LOL

theres a pic of nightmare for everyone to see. he loves hikari sinking pellets and worms and isnt shy about munching them down.

i really like the forum and all the info thats available.

if you are using ro then you need to add minerals to the water otherwise he/she can suffer anemia, (bit like putting a saltwater fish in a tropical tank) axolotls are moderate to hard water animals and require minerals in the water.

its actually the water at the fill your own water jug stations. i goes thru a softening process as well, do you think that adds enogh? their label claims its RO, charcoal, particulate filtered and then softened.

you are going to have to add minerals to the water, go to axolotl.org under requirements it should have more information regarding water hardness/minerals etc..

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
