Hello! My tank runs a bit cool- 59 degrees most days. Dart seems to be fine, but would he be even better if I put in a small heater to get it up to 64 or so? I think it is generally recommended to be between 64 and 71 degrees, right?

Thoughts?

ideal temperature is 15°c/59°f - 18°c/64°f tolerant temperature is 4°c/39°f - 24°c/75°f, as a rule colder is better.
unless your tank is going below double digits ie.. 10°c a heater isn't required.

Axolotls are cold water amphibians. 59F is perfectly fine and you shouldn't worry about the temperature unless it drops below 10C or 50F. 71F is tolerance temperature and Dart would do worse at that temperature. 68F is generally the high end of the temperature scale. So your axie is quite happy how it is.

Normally I accept wolfen's wisdom but I have read no where that suggests 24C is tolerable. 20-21C is tolerable and even then you don't want prolonged exposure to it. I've seen cases of Axolotls suffering hyperthermia at 73F which is roughly 23C. They start throwing up food and begin suffering tissue damage at that point.

sorry meant tolerant, as in survivable just, ideal and tolerant levels are here ... Water Quality Explained: How It Can Affect Your Axolotl's Health - WSAVA 2015 Congress - VIN

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
