Hallo !! My name is Sylvia, and my axolotl's name is Graphite. I've owned Graphite for 4 years and believe he is 4 years old. Graphite has been recently moved from a 20gal tank with a snail, to a 50gal tank with multiple snails, ghost shrimp, and zebra danios. At the time of posting this thread, Graphite has fallen ill with what I believe to be some sort of fungus on the mouth. Because of this the photos attached to this thread will be from a week ago, I am currently doing the best I can to treat him and hopefully he will be restored to better health. Graphite enjoys to watch people from the edges of his tank and occasionally swim around : )

hello and welcome.
firsly, i would remove the zebra danios. fisb are generally not recommended to live with axolotls because they can eat away at their gills. similarly, they can carry parasites and various illnesses that can be transmitted to your axolotl.
as for the potential fungal issue, my phone is barely working due to dropping it in my axolotls tank (unfortunate I know) and i can't see the photos well, but it looks like he has more of an issue on his skin than in his mouth. tub him ASAP with clean and cool dechlorinated water, and start tea baths. more instructions can be given if needed. @wolfen may have more advice regarding swabbing with topical treatments.

Thank you for the welcome and the advice! I posted a thread in the sick axolotl discussion (I'm not used to forums so I hope those are the right terms ... ) where I have gotten some good advice from wolfen. I do have the supplies for tea baths, but I've been giving him salt baths which are working well right now so I don't think I'll be giving him a tea bath .. The photos in the post are of Graphite without the aforementioned 'mouth fungus', as they were taken before it appeared. I do agree that he appears to have an issue with his skin, thankfully those spots have cleared up due to the salt baths from what I can tell. He's currently being kept in a quarantine tank with clean and dechlorinated water which I clean daily :-D! Unfortunately I have no where to put the zebra danios (the betta tank already has 6 other fish, excluding the betta ... lol ) so I'll have to leave them in there, they don't bother the axolotl and keep to themself ... they school near the top and are fed daily.

wolfen is lovely, so its good to hear you got advice from them. salt baths are a good way to go, but i usually try tea baths first. either way, if its working, its not an issue. thrilled to hear his skin is clearing up! the danios can live in the tank- for a bit. if it were me, i'd probably wait to see if 1.) he eats them, 2.) sell/rehome them or 3.) tub/quarantine them until you can get a better plan. i'm not a huge fish person so i'm not entirely sure about their care needs, so i trust you know more than i. if they're near the top then it should be alright for now :)

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
