Hey!
Yesterday i fed my axolotl 2 thirds of an earthworm (might be a night crawler actually not sure) but she's only little and she couldn't manage the last third (although believe me she tried :D ) in her defence it was a pretty big worm.
So i left the last piece of worm in a little tub in a cool room overnight (parents wouldn't let me put it in the fridge haha) intending to feed it to her today to save killing another one. My question is will it be safe to eat? Could it have gone off overnight? I sniffed it and it smelt fine but it had some orangey worm blood on it yuck and i really don't want to poison my axolotl. I found it in my garden yesterday if that affects anything?
I'm kind of short on worms too and she won't eat pellets so it would be good if i could just feed her that... Anyone know if it's okay to feed to her?
Thanks in advance!

Hello
I feed my axolotl worms all of the time. I have never had a worm go bad just due. I won't not feed my axolotl a dead worm though just in case. But overall I think you are fine.

I wouldn't risk it, worms will go off very quickly once they're dead. I'm struggling to find enough worms myself at the moment, the ground is frozen! But I would only use fresh ones.

Okay, in the future un eaten worm goes in the bin. Maybe it would have been safe but it's definitely not worth the risk, let's hope this worm famine ends soon haha :D
Thanks for all the input everyone I'm glad i got that cleared up

Earthworms have a fore ("head") and a rear end.
When you cut a worm into 2 pieces, the fore piece (with the "head") can stay alive providing good life conditions are given. The rear end usually moves a lot but dies and rots quickly.

When I have to give only a piece of an earthworm, I usually give a piece from the rear side, and I can keep the fore half (not in the aquarium) for the next time.
