Hi, I have four long-toed salamanders that I am keeping for pets, but they hide whenever I turn on lights. I am currently keeping the tank in the dark, but It would be nice if they were active in the day. Will this change over time, or are they nocturnal? I also have them in a 10 gallon terrerium, is this too small? Two are about 4 inches, and the other two are about 3-3 1/2 inches. please help.
Mark.

They should be primarily nocturnal. They might move around during the day once in a while for food or new cover. Misting/rainfall may encourage it too.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
