I am hoping to find some eastern newts this year , supposedly they are in my area but they are pretty rare

Anyone have any tips?

What time of year would they come out to breed , ect

Since my area is a colder climate I was thinking middle of March to mid April?

I wasn't planning on taking them, just wanted to get a quick look at one

I just saw the thing about no revealing the location

My bad for asking , just thought it would be cool to see this species

I've also been wanting to look around my area for salamanders or newts. You should probably look up their breeding season and their usual hang out spot and maybe you'll even find some eggs! :D

They should be active year round.Find some ponds and look around and in the ponds.Take a net and dip it in the pond and you may catch them in the net.The best time is spring though after and during rains would be best.Forest ponds are more likely to have newts.Good luck.

well if anyone is interested I finally found a central newt - lifer for me

funny you find stuff like that when you arent even looking. I turned over a log because it looked like a good log for blue spotted

here is the picture Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

I know these arent a big deal for people on the east coast but they are pretty rare here in northern Illinois so it was pretty cool

also I returned the newt back how I found it
