I need some serious help I have just rescued and axolotl from my sisters kid's (yep nephews but I'm pretty mad at them at the moment).
It's in really bad condition It's belly and sides were completely covered in a thick furry fungus and it seems to have a lot of skin damage.
I haven't kept axolotls since it was a teenager but I just couldn't leave it there.
I have done salt baths which seems to have cleared up the fungus.
and I have fridged it to speed up healing but seriously how much can they heal
This is pretty bad
I'll post photo's this afternoon Hold your stomach really .......

Without a doubt, they probably didn't use settled water for over a night. This can be extremely dangerous to the axolotls.

oh wow, how did your sister not notice such extreme mistreatment? it boggles the mind, the poor thing, im sure this would do much better in the axolotle sick forum (http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...xolotls-ambystoma-mexicanum/f58-sick-axolotl/), from what i've heard though axies have wolverineish healing abilities, i hope the poor gal makes it (if it was me im positive i would be dead, amphibians sure are amazing little critters).

im rooting for her full recovery and kind of praying that such horrible care never befalls her again.

P.S. i threw up in my mouth a little on the third pic.

I wish you the best of luck with this but frankly to my eye that's a dead axolotl, it just doesn't know it yet. If there's any hope, you need to get it to an axolotl-savvy vet right now, but I'll be very surprised if the animal survives.

There is no such thing as a axolotl-savvy vet in rotorua I did a ring around to see if anyone could help I even checked at the local pet shop that sells these and only got what i'm already doing I'll keep doing what I'm doing and see how it goes
Cheers
Sean

You are doing exactly what you should be. But only continue with the salt baths while you are certain there is still fungus present. Using a salt bath on that much exposed flesh must be terribly uncomfortable, so try not to use them for a longer period than necessary.

Is the Axolotl eating? and make sure you are using spring water or dechlorinated water for your water changes.

I have stopped the salt baths But will start them again I have tried to gleen from my nephews when she last ate But nobody is sure I have made my displeasure quite clear to them and my sister over this.
I hav been looking after her for about 2 weeks nows and she has not eaten while I have had her.
Although her injuries are severe she does not seem to be in pain and the signs of stree she was showing when I collected her have diminished alot since she has been fridged.
I am going to keep everything up and hope that she recovers My nephews won't be getting her back If she does recover I have made that very clear to them.
I know I am mean But I loved the first pair I had years ago Ever since I saw my first axie on tv I have been fasinated by them So it really has been a life long attraction and to see them treated so badly makes me mad
Ok thats my rant time for work Belle (yep I just named her lol) is resting peacefully in the fridge

hi sean
i dont think you are being mean i think you are being responsible....i wish you and belle all the best. keep up the good work and i will say a pray for belle cause i think she needs all the help she can get right now.

Thanks Lea and everyone else I'll keep you upto date on how Belle is going every few days.
Today when I changed the water I notice that her colour is very bright and her toes are tipped with black so by the look of it even going through all this she has come into sexual maturity as well hopefully that is a good sign

any updates? how is Belle doing? i hope she is still fine (as in not dead).

Fingers crossed..... I am so glad that you managed to rescue the axie from your nephews. You are doing all you can and like many on here we are hoping she pulls through

Keep us updated

Hi Sorry It has been a long time Sadly Belle din't make it But looking after her has really rekindled my love affair with Axolotls I have decided that since I now have a tank set up I am going to have axolotls once more I went to the pet shop and brought 3 young axy's at a horrendous price lol
I made sure the tank was cleaned properly and the water treated before introducing them to their new home .
I have had them about 3 weeks and they are awesome I am feeding worms ox heart shrimp pellets and this meaty axy food from the pet shop ( i like variety in my diet and I think they do too lol)

Hi Sean,

Sorry to hear about your loss but know you truly tried your best! Congrats on the new trio and I wish you lots of luck with them - hope to see some pics sometime!

When you say worms, I hope you mean earthworms and are using the ox heart as only an occasional treat. Mammal flesh is difficult to digest. I agree, variety is great and you can add frozen bloodworms to your list if you desired! Take care.

well, at the very least belle passed away in a loving/caring home, im glad to hear that you are back into axies and i hope your 3 little axies do extremely well.

all the best to you sean.

hi sean

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
