The tank however is very small for four axies and very barren.
You need about 18" of tank space for each axie nominally. they also need places to hide, caves plants etc.
If this is your permanent setup it would need some developing the tanks section of this site has some very cool setups.
Also your axies are showing signs of stress. forward pointing gills have a look at www.axolotl.org it has helpful advise about the causes and sollutions.
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
