I have an unheated basement that runs between 50 and 60F. Is this warm enough to raise eggs or larvae? I am just deciding where to set up the big tanks.

In the wild breeding season is from November to January so the eggs and larvae sometimes have to cope with even lower temperatures. 60F should be nearly perfect for development, even though many breeders raise their eggs around 70F (maybe for faster hatching?).

Best regards,

Jens

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
