CITES is an international treaty drawn up in 1973 to protect wildlife against over-exploitation, and to prevent international trade from threatening species

CITES- Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species

CITES regulates the trade of protected species (endangered and threatened). There are three articles to CITES, I, II, and III. These regulate how endangered a species is considered. Animals which are listed on CITES cannot be traded internationally without permits, regardless of their origin.
