Hi, I have a 5 month old axolotl and am struggling with feeding. She seems to like bloodworm but I've heard that's not a great main diet. She won't eat pellets, doesn't seem to notice daphnia and we've had mixed success with ox heart. I know that worms are good but I can't cut them up... I've tried and I just can't do it. Are there any worms or other live foods she can eat that are small enough to be fed whole? She is around 5 inches long at the moment. Thanks in advance!

juvenile axolotls are more movement orientated then adults, give live food ie.. bloodworms, brineshrimp, shrimp, fish etc..
bloodworms are fine as part of a balanced diet, even worms don't contain all vitamins required (ie.. vitamin A) and should be fed along with a variety of foods, feed eyed food (shrimp, fish, etc..) as well as annelids (worms) for a balanced diet.

Thanks so much for that. Any recommendations on types of fish suitable for her age? Would guppy fry be a good option? I know a lot of people feed their adult axolotl with adult guppies.

most live bearing are suitable ie.. guppies, mollies, platies, swordtail.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
