Here's the relevant reference and pic from the book Herpetology of China (Zhao Er-Mi and K. Adler. 1993)

I took a few pictures today while doing water changes. I'm wondering if anyone else is keeping these? Sorry about the rather poor quality of the pics:

Wow they have a very abstract similarity to hellbenders and the asian giants.

Seeing the last photo I can now understand their similarities with Ranodon... There won't be many keeping these, maybe some people in Japan?

Hi Wouter,

here is another topic about that species: http://www.caudata.org/forum/messages/985/65978.html?1150801500

I have found one animal offered in Germany last year and bought it - unfortunately it died a few weeks after my purchase. I think it was the fault of the dealer, which did not sell animals in good quality (what I didn't know - a visit of his shop a few weeks later made me sick!). I don't know if the animals got ill at the wholesaler in Hongkong or in the pet-shop of the importeur. An revision for this pet-shop: lousy and filthy - it is wasted money to buy there!

There is another keeper in China of that species - he is also on this board.

Best Greetings,

Kamil
