I'm in the Northeast USA where summers are not too bad but winters are pretty severe. The frostline is about 4' in my area and the soil is quite difficult to dig. I'd like to keep some salamanders outside but most of the outdoor info I can find is either vague or from areas where the temps rarely drop below freezing.

Since I cannot dig below the frostline, my idea was to use a coldframe to lessen the degree of freezing. Does anyone know if this will be effective or have other ideas?
